The Origin of Skeena Fly Zone
Skeena Fly Zone was created by Jaap Kalkman from Skeena River Fly Supply. A lifelong passion for nature and fly fishing has lead to the development of a fly fishing and fly tying information site that promotes conservation and cooperation between interest groups.
As our society progresses into a more complex and competitive social structure, angling, and fly fishing specifically, is following this trend. The goal of Skeena Fly Zone is to promote a more conservative, sustainable use of rivers, lakes, oceans, and the fish in it, and focus on the authentic, contemplative, non-competitive nature of our sport. We further promote communication and cooperation between the various interest groups that participate or interact with fly fishing.
A lifetime of fly fishing, 25 years of steelhead guiding, former part ownership in Tapam Lodge, many global exploratory fishing trips, former Guideline Power Team, casting instructor, and ownership of Skeena River Fly Supply has given Jaap the chance to sample many fisheries, test products and gather an in-depth knowledge of the many different aspects of fly fishing.
Along with his wife Roanne, they live in Smithers, British Columbia, right next to our beloved Bulkley River. They travel globally, usually to remote areas, and usually in pursuit of fish. For much of the year Jaap and Roanne can be found somewhere on a gravel bar in the Skeena region. Their hope is that Skeena Fly Zone will help other anglers in finding useful information and bring people from various aspects of fly fishing together.
Jaap and Roanne look forward to creating a place for information and unification for those that are passionate about fly fishing.
