Conservation in British Columbia

Skeena Fly Zone is located in Smithers BC, on the banks of the Bulkley river in the heart of Skeena country. Our area is one of the few drainages in the world that have relatively healthy natural salmon and steelhead stocks. However, multiple projects are proposed that threaten this unique system. It is difficult to convince politicians of the economic value of nature. Below are some links of conservation organizations that could use your help and support in the fight to preserve some of the most valuable resources that we have. Please support:

Raincoast Conservation FoundationRaincoast Conservation Foundation

Raincoast is a team of conservationists and scientists empowered by our research to protect the lands, waters and wildlife of coastal British Columbia. “We use rigorous, peer-reviewed science and community engagement to further our conservation objectives. We call this approach ‘informed advocacy’ and it is unique amongst conservation efforts. We investigate to understand coastal species and processes. We inform by bringing science to decision makers and communities. We inspire action to protect wildlife and their wilderness habitats.”

Flies for Wild RiversFlies For Wild Rivers

Flies For Wild Rivers represents an opportunity for anglers to give back to the rivers and fish that we have all come to love. All proceeds from each fly sold will be donated to Skeena Wild Conservation Trust and the Steelhead Society of BC. The inception of this project came from a local angler while fishing his favorite summer run steelhead river. Oliver Holt wants to promote the conservation of the Skeena watershed and challenge all anglers to consider doing the same. Let’s change the paradigm, let’s put the fish first!

Habitat Conservation Trust FoundationHabitat Conservation Trust Foundation

The Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation is a non-profit charitable foundation acting as Trustee of the Habitat Conservation Trust. HCTF came into existence because its major contributors (hunters, anglers, trappers, and guide-outfitters) were willing to pay for conservation work above and beyond that expected by government for basic management of wildlife and fish resources.
Vision: A future where freshwater fish, wildlife and their habitats are healthy and valued by all British Columbians.
Mission Statement: It is the mission of HCTF to improve the conservation outcomes of BC’s fish and wildlife, and the habitats in which they live. We make a difference by funding conservation projects and by educating and engaging the public about BC’s natural assets.

Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition

“Cultivating a sustainable future from a sustainable environment rooted in our culture and thriving wild salmon ecosystem.”

The Skeena Watershed Conservation Coalition was founded in 2004 by a diverse group of people living and working in the Skeena River watershed. The board of directors and membership reflects the broad interests of the people in this region. They are united in understanding that short term industrial development plans, even 50 year plans, will not benefit the region in the long run if they undermine the social and environmental fabric that holds the watershed and its communities together.
